Summary
Students devise a collaborative project in which they encounter each other’s embodied selves. They explore together their personal world of gestures, physical signatures and research each other’s personal and cultural background through which their physicality is being constructed.
They combine physical practice/exploration, observation, conversations, journaling, and theoretical reading/referencing. The outcome of this research will consist of the showing of their physical practice and created material as well as an oral presentation of their findings.
Content and Design of the project:
This is self-conducted student project, supported by a kick-off workshop and weekly meetings with the mentor.
Through this project, students research together their own personal world of gestures and use it as grounds for physical practice and artistic exploration.
They devise themselves practices through which they physically experience, explore observe and analyse the movement and physicality both by means of self-exploration and proprioception and by means of external observation of others. Describing and analysing what aspect of movement define it and how physicality changes according to environment and contexts, is the an important aspect of the research. Student are expected to gain insight into their own evolving physicality and embodied self, get to know each other as movers and connect their physical exploration with historical knowledge and socio-cultural concepts. Both studio exploration and theoretical references feed the artistic research of movement material.
The concept of « gesture »understood as a meaningful action or « state of being » and relation to self and the world is one of the guiding references in the research.
