Study credits are denoted according to a study load system that corresponds with the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). According to the Act on Higher Education and Scientific Research (WHW), a full-time HBO study programme comprising 240 study credits (EC) is equal to 1680 hours of study annually, a combination of supervised and unsupervised learning. The study load of the propaedeutic phase is 60 study credits. The total study load of the main phase amounts to 180 study credits, 60 for each of the three study years.
Study credits, as indicated above, are not awarded per subject and/or in sections, but integrally per semester. The way we award study credits is not directly related to the study load. Per semester you can be awarded:
- 20 study credits for sufficient attendance and taking part in education
- 10 study credits for satisfactory progress and development
The term review meeting can in the event of unsatisfactory results or insufficient attendance, give you one or more supplementary assignments to fulfill before awarding study credits. These assignments must be completed and assessed within a certain set time limit.
At the end of each semester you will be informed of your study results and your attained study credits during an individual talk with your artistic director, study supervisor, mentor or main subject teacher.
As you pass through the different phases of the study programme, assessment of your study progress undergoes a shift in emphasis: from a more didactic, learning-oriented assessment to a more artistic assessment. The artistic director and ultimately the Board of Directors are responsible for the integral assessment and a student’s results.
All assessments and conclusions will be entered in your individual student dossier that you have access to on request. More information on tests and assessments can be found in the ATD’s Education and Exam Regulation (OER).

Study load
A dance or theatre career is not a nine to five job. On the one hand the study load is well-defined; the number of hours you are expected to devote to a subject or component. But it is also up to you as student to invest extra hours in theatre attendance and supporting and viewing performances by fellow students.
It is difficult to cite an average study load because this differs per student and study period. The average work roster has 30 to 35 face-to-face instruction hours but the study load is subject to certain peaks.
