Summary
Looking at the wide range of performative forms the culture of dance has produced, we will firstly try to identify and define their features and identity. We will further focus on specific works and analyse their artistic identity, their formal features, aesthetic tendencies, cultural implications etc. Next to analysing what kind of meaning is produced and how, we will also explore different modes of analysis and reading dance, and the perspectives or frames which are generated by certain modes of spectatorship, like the choreographical, the criticial, the dramaturgical or the theoretical. Interdisciplinary and intercultural aspects will be a second layer of attention.

Content and design of the class
In this class we will discuss a range of conceptual questions relevant to the practice of Performance Analysis through a number of case studies. We will start from asking what Performance Analysis is, why do it, who does it do, and what are models and practices does it entail. How to go from experiences (embodied, disembodied) to critical analysis and theory? We will delve on philosophical questions of what defines dance and its genres, how does it constitute itself as a stage art next to being a ritual and social activity, what spaces and places dance occupies, what may be the difference between dance and choreography, what defines dance repertoire, what is the work and status of a dancer in different dance genres and traditions. Finally what kind of faculties or skills do you need to develop for watching dance?
