Summary
These sessions derive from a movement-based theater practice, which offers improvisation as an approach towards creativity, self-expression, performance, and group dynamics. Sara combines her experience as a director, performance coach, Master DanceAbility teacher, and performer. The participants will explore personal resources through imagination, memory, free association, emotions, and humor that may provide entries into new ways of moving, communicating, and immediate composition/staging. The sessions will also explore different societal and global issues that can be embodied, expressed, translated, and transformed.

Content and design of the class
Class consist of a combination of physical and vocal exercises, guided improvisation and discussion. Overview of elements and approaches used throughout the sessions:

  • Sensation, relation, time, design
  • Breath, voice, body awareness, gaze
  • Changing perspectives and opening the backspace
  • Performativity and interdisciplinary connections
  • Action Research: Collaboration and Individuality
  • Theatre of the Oppressed and Japanese Noh Theatre
  • Moving into a state of mind • Structure and Chaos
  • Applying praxis to one’s own artistry Performative coaching will take place throughout the whole trajectory.

Learning Goals

  • Mentally: Reaching states of mind through imagination
  • Physically: Applying one’s movement vocabulary to one’s own personal story
  • Emotionally: To translate and transform emotions through the performative body
  • To gain knowledge of self, other, community, and environment
  • To utilize the movement/theater improvisational skills of storyboarding and immediate change of context
  • To apply vocal, physical and expressive tools and skills to communication and performance
