Summary
This course introduces students to basic musical elements and structures and related skills such as reading music, rhythmic notation, hearing measures (counting), interval training, producing rhythm and vocal harmonies, recognising musical styles, or recognising instruments. We will use sources of Western classical, contemporary and pop music, as well as some West-African music styles.

Content and design of the class
The lessons will be split up in two sections, a more theoretical part, learning about music and listening to music and a more practical part where we will work with music, singing, making rhythms and working with music in software. Learning goals Ability to hear the rhythmic structure of music Recognising different styles of music Basic knowledge of music notation Notate simple rhythms Hearing basic intervals.

Lessons take place in a group possibly divided into smaller groups learning from each other.

Assessment criteria:
All the learning goals will be assessed Students are assessed in regards to the class learning goals and their personal development trajectory. One can formulate this in own way. Choose if  one wants all of the learning goals to be assessed or if there  are main ones. One can add attitudes: attendance, participation etc.

Method of assessment
Small assignments in class, continuous feedback, and exam.
